Poetry by Heart 2026

It has been a pleasure this year, as it is every year, to see KS3 students choosing to commit poems to heart in their free time and being prepared to perform them to an audience. It can be a daunting feat to undertake but every year students sign up to do this so it is testament to their desire for challenge and their ability to memorise. This year’s competition took place on Wednesday 18th March in X11 with a small audience of supportive parents/carers. The students performed a wide range of poems which they had chosen themselves from the Poetry by Heart website and practised for weeks until they were word-perfect.

Our winners this year are : Victoria 8C and Heritage 9I in the classic two poem competition. Congratulations to them both.

An excellent standard of accuracy, understanding, voice and performance from both of them. In the Freestyle competition, Victoria, Chunmay and Shathuri 8C went through to the next round for their group performance as do Therese and Lily 8C. The highest score for this category went to Cecilia 8H who is also through to the next round. I wish them all the very best of luck. The video recordings will be sent off now to the national competition for the Poetry by Heart judges to select the finalists who will be invited to perform on the stage at the Globe theatre in London.
